Project Justification
The key elements that justify the development of the Geoportal are identified as follows:
- Originality. Currently, there is no website that provides access to cross-border data of the physio geographical, socioeconomic and thematic context in an interoperable, bilingual format under international Geographic Information Systems (GIS) standards.
- Existing unlinked data. The existing geographic data sets on each side of the border have different structures and semantics as there is no standardized data model that facilitates the exchange and use of data between institutions of both nations.
- Complexity in data management. The multiple and complex dimensions of the border between Mexico and the United States require the use of diverse and rigorous scientific approaches to research and management. In order to support these challenges, there is a need for the design, construction and application of technological tools that facilitate the management, organization, storage and dissemination of huge amounts of data via a data warehouse.
- Geospatial technology as a service. The Geoportal is a cutting-edge geospatial technology tool that can serve as a platform to integrate, visualize and analyze data on topics of great interest to the governments, researchers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of the United States and Mexico, in order to support the planning and management of strategic issues.
